To The Point | Review - The Good Dinosaur

Hello everyone and welcome to another To The Point, where time is money, which could be spent on this week's DVD release of The Good Dinosaur.

The Good Dinosaur takes an interesting, what-if scenario, and turns it into a pretty good movie. Disney Pixar is at again with it's usual brand of mixing mature, adult concepts into an animated, kid-friendly movie. This time, the story revolves around the idea of making your mark on the world, and what it means to be part of a family. Voice acting, cinematography, and animation are all up to the Pixar standard, but I can't help feel like something was missing in this one. It was cute and funny, heart-wrenching and real, but it just didn't strike the perfect chord for me this time. Let me know if you felt the same.

Overall, it's a worthy movie to add to your animated collection. My rating: 6.8/10

Movie Review: Frozen

Hi everybody, Dave here with another - night at the movies review, review, review....

Tonight's review is on the Disney movie: Frozen

This movie has generated so much Oscar buzz and has won so many awards, that at first glance, I halfheartedly said to myself: "well that's to be expected, it's a Disney movie". But then I watched it, and was instantly amazed.

I can't remember the last "Disney" movie I watched, maybe Wreck-it Ralph, and that was good, but a pure "Disney" movie - I guess it would be Tangled. I put Disney in quotation marks because I don't consider Iron Man 3 a Disney movie, despite being produced by them and Marvel studios being owned by them. I do, however, consider Tangled, Lion King, Marry Poppins, etc., etc. as "Disney" movies.

So with that being said, as I sat there watching this, I could actually feel the joy and magic that Disney once brought me as a kid, coming back up. And that, my friends, is a serious complement. I haven't really taken Disney serious, as a studio, since I was a kid. You know, as an adult, you hear of these movies being released under the Disney banner and you know they're going to be good (Disney is an amazingly creative studio with amazingly creative people) but you're not a kid anymore so why bother. Or at least, that's how I feel about it.

With Frozen, Disney stole my heart again with the on-screen magic of their fantastic animation, catchy songs (Let it Go), and simply fantastic story-telling. You can say that the movie may be predictable at times, but honestly, in the grand scheme of things, this isn't a nick against it from me. The characters were all well done, from an animation stand point as well as a voice-acting stand point. I grew to feel for these characters, hope with them, cheer them on, and laugh with them. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie from start to finish, I even found myself humming a couple of the songs the next day - there are very few movies that stay with me after I've watched them, and even fewer that I would watch again. I can truly say that Frozen has been welcomed into the category with open arms.

Dave's score: 8.5/10

Movie Review: Knights of Bada**dom

Hi everybody, Dave here, and welcome to another evening at the movies (review).

Tonight's feature is Knights of Badassdom:

I knew practically nothing of this movie going in, just the basic premise of three friends accidentally summoning a demon from hell during a L.A.R.P tournament. Oh, and that Peter Dinklage (a.k.a. Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones) was going to be in it. Which, to be fair, was basically the main reason that I wanted to watch the movie.

Beside Dinklage were great actors: Steve Zahn, Summer Glau, Danny Pudi (Community), and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood). Now, granted, on paper, this movie seemed like it was going to be a comedy and it probably would've done better as a comedy, but as it turns out, I think it was suppose to be a action/thriller/spoof.

Let me put it this way, did you ever see Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny? It had a feeling like that; there was action, a bit of comedy here and there, a demon overlord seeking to rule the world, and geeky friends trying to stop it. None of those things are inherently bad, mind you, but it was the execution that was lacking in this movie for me. And looking back on it, everyone did a really great job of playing their parts; from Summer Glau being kick-a**, to Steve Zahn and Danny Pudi being crazy, everyone was on point. Maybe with the exception of the main character, or at least I think he was suppose to be the main character: Ryan Kwanten. His character was this hard core, metal rocker guy who used to be into the whole D&D (dungeons and dragons) thing, but "moved on" when he found his woman. And it is here, I think, that I felt the disconnect - throughout the movie were these hard rock ballads in the background, especially during the action scenes, which worked great, mind you, but honestly and again, if this was shot as a comedy - would've made it work even better.

I mean, picture this: a group of people dressed as knights, fairies, wizards, etc., running at each other with heavy metal music playing in the background - could be good, right? Well, I don't know because I didn't feel like it was done right in this.

Overall: the action was over-the-top with the "demon;" I felt like the music was good but could've been better if the movie, as a whole, was shot differently; the demon itself looked like something out of an episode of the Power Rangers; and I honestly can't tell if the characters were better off in the end.

Dave's Score: 4.0/10
