Opening This Week - June 28, 2013

It's hot outside. Like, unbearably hot. Luckily, we know of a way you can spend at least an hour and a half inside an air conditioned room stuffing enjoying cool refreshments all the while being entertained. Go to the movies! As luck would have it, there are a couple of new movies to pick from this weekend so read on to plan your escape from the heat. Here is what's opening this week.

The Heat

Imagine Melissa McCarthy's character from Bridesmaids becomes a cop and teams up with Sandra Bullocks character from the beginning of Miss Congeniality. That's pretty much what it looks like we're gonna get with The Heat, the new buddy cop movie opening this weekend. A lot could go wrong here, but McCarthy is on a roll these days and Bullock could use a comedy win after her last attempt back in 2009 underwhelmed before she jumped onto the dramatic wagon for a bit.

White House Down

A group of terrorists take over the White House and it's up to one secret service agent to save the president and foil their evil plot. Sound familiar? Well it should because it's the exact plot of Olympus Has Fallen which came out back in March. In this completely unrelated movie, Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx stand in for Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart in what looks like a lighter, maybe more comedic version. We loved Olympus Has Fallen, which makes me skeptical that White House Down can live up to it.

Some Notable Films Still Playing

Monster's University (Last Week's Box Office Winner)

World War Z
