What Batman Story Should Ben Afleck's Solo Batman Film Be Based On?

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is out in the world now (check out our spoiler-free review here) and no matter how you felt about that film as a whole, one point seems to be universally agreed upon: Ben Afleck IS Batman. Take that positive buzz and couple it with the recent reports that Afleck has written a draft of a solo Bat-movie and the odds start to look good we'll be getting one pretty soon. The question then becomes what will that movie be about? Now of course they could conjure up a brand new original story, but knowing Afleck's love for the character, it's far more likely we'll see some adaptation of a classic Batman story. In this post, we'll offer some speculation as to which classic Bat-story may be involved, in no particular order.

Hush

In this beloved story-line, Batman finds himself pursued by an unknown new enemy who knows his true identity. At its heart, the Hush story-line is a mystery showcasing Batman's detective skills and featuring many of his other notorious villains. Not to mention it lends itself to a possible rematch between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel and a possible tie-in to the Robin story teased in BvS. My take is that any story that highlights Batman's Sherlock Holmes-ian characteristics would make for a fascinating movie.

The Last Arkham

This story-line from the early 90's sees Batman checking himself into Arkham Asylum to investigate a string of murders in Gotham. While the rest of the story in the comics may not have developed that premise enough, my what a premise! I can just imagine Batman locked in Arkham rubbing straight jackets with some of his most infamous rogues.

Prey

In Prey, Batman faces off against Dr. Hugo Strange, a world famous psychologist on a public crusade against Batman. The Gotham City Police place Strange on a task force whose purpose is to take down the Batman. The actual story in the comics takes place pretty early on in Batman's career but with some minor tweaks, I can definitely see it working in the universe setup in Batman V Superman.

Arkham Asylum

In recent years, Batman has been represented in the video game world by the Arkham series kicked off by 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum. In the game's story, the infamous asylum is taken over by none other than the Joker himself. Batman has to fight through his most dangerous enemies to catch the Clown Prince of Crime and discover his nefarious end-game. This is a strong choice as it once again allows us to meet any number of villains Batfleck has put away in the past while giving as much screen time as possible to Jared Leto's Joker.

So there they are. These are my top choices for stories the Ben Afleck solo Bat-movie might adapt. Of course, there are over 75 years of Batman stories so these don't even scratch the surface, but given the universe setup in Batman V Superman, I believe any of these would be amazing to see on the big screen.
