Movie Review: This Is The End

Seth Rogen and countless other celebrities attend a party at James Franco's house when the Apocalypse begins. Now, the remaining friends must hunker down and try to survive as Los Angeles becomes hell on earth. While Man of Steel stole much of this film's marketing thunder, This Is The End still managed to rake in plenty of cash at the box office on its opening weekend. So how was it?

The Good

Its rare that I watch a movie and think, "This movie must have been a blast to make." This Is The End definitely is the exception. With such a funny cast who are clearly all real-life friends, one can only imagine the hours of fun they had just hanging out trying to make each other laugh.

Another plus for the film is the unique take on the now tired "end of the world" genre. It tries to mesh the awkward comedy of Superbad with the spectacle of 2012 and it pulls it off effectively. The juxtaposition of the two is refreshing and fun! Also it's always fun when actors play themselves.

The Bad

While the movie was obviously fun to make, a lot of that fails to show through. The movie is has plenty of bright spots comedy-wise, but sometimes I found myself thinking, "I know I'm supposed to be laughing, but this just isn't funny." In between the laughs the film does deliver are filler dick and masturbation jokes that, at this point, just aren't that funny. With a cast so full of comedic talent, I expect better than that and even when This Is The End delivers, it fails in the very next scene.

The Verdict

Although This Is The End pulls off a unique idea with a few good laughs, ultimately it succumbs to weak jokes that make it feel more like a run of the mill generic comedy rather than a Seth Rogen-Evan Goldberg comedy.

Dusty's Score: 5 out of 10
