First Impressions: The Giver Trailer

Happy hump day movie fans! Today we have been given our first glimpse into yet another young adult novel adaptation: The Giver. The new trailer for the film, starring Meryl Strep, Jeff Bridges, Katie Holmes and various new faces we haven't really seen before, is right here:

Ever since the success of the Hunger Games, young adult novels have been hitting cinemas at lightning fast speeds. Of the books for this demographic, there were really only two I cared about seeing: Ender's Game and The Giver. Ender's Game was a success in my eyes. So knowing The Giver is close behind is exciting!

The trailer is pretty pedestrian, unfortunately. Nothing really extraordinary jumps out at you. The story is hinted at, but some parts of the trailer show events that never happened in the book which is sure to ruffle feathers.

One of the best qualities of the book is the quiet desperation of its characters. Everyone is a slave to this utopia and deep down they know it. While the trailer captures a few hints of that feeling, it mostly looks like an action film, which The Giver should definitely not be.

Sure, trailers are not always an accurate  representation of the final product; but from what I'm seeing so far, this may be a let down for me. What did you think of The Giver trailer?
